Different Faux Wood Plantation Shutters In Las Vegas

March 02, 2020

While there are many faux wood plantation shutters on the market in Las Vegas, they are not all the same.  While some faux wood coverings will last forever without chipping, warping, or fading, other faux wood shutters will begin to break down in just a short amount of time.

It can be difficult to determine what’s best about the different faux wood plantation shutters.  But after you learn about the different types of faux wood, it will be easier to see which interior shutter will always look great.

The following list examines the different varieties of faux wood shutters in Las Vegas and orders them from the least ideal to the most best:

Vinyl Shutters:

Some window treatments that use vinyl present themselves as faux wood.  But don’t be deceived, vinyl is not faux wood. Vinyl’s plastic look and slick finish can be difficult to blend with a decor style, unlike quality faux wood or real wood shutters.  Vinyl may be one of the most inexpensive plantation shutter products on the market, but you get what you pay for.

Vinyl is also affected by heat. It’s not uncommon to see vinyl window treatments melt or yellow due to sunlight exposure. Because of their habit of warping or cracking and their poor insular nature, vinyl shutters won’t grant much energy-efficiency to your home -- especially if the shutter uses hollow shutters.

  • Benefits:

Lowest cost of the non-wood plantation shutters.

  • Drawbacks:

Looks like plastic; flimsy materials; hollow louvers; little energy efficiency; will warp, splinter or yellow.

Synthetic Wrapped Product:

A step up from vinyl shutters are synthetic plantation shutters.  These window treatments are made of pressed wood, wood chip materials, or glued MDF, and then wrapped with a synthetic, vinyl, or plastic coating. The plantation shutters are heavier and can appear much more like a real wood plantation shutter than their hollow louvered alternatives.

Unfortunately, synthetic wrapped shutters have plenty of cons. The pressed grain under the outer layer can be extremely permeable, leaving the shutter sensitive to humidity and moisture. It’s commonplace to find a warped or splintered louver or find that the synthetic wrapping has split or peeled away.  Also, wrapped shutters cannot be custom-fitted for specialty shaped windows like arches or ovals.

  • Benefits:

Thicker than vinyl shutters; may resemble real wood.

  • Drawbacks:

Not great for high humidity or high moisture areas. Will take in moisture and humidity. Aren't moisture resistant; synthetic wrap can chip away; warps or splits easily; no custom shapes.

Solid Extruded Faux Wood Shutters:

Plantation shutters constructed from solid extruded faux wood give you more durability than all of the other non-wood plantation shutters.  Because the synthetic fibers saturate the window treatment, they form more substantial, solid louvers that are more resistant warping.  You will also see that these treatments last longer on average and will act much more like basswood shutters. Solid extruded faux wood shutters also can be custom-fitted to fit any window shape and size -- even semi-circles.

But a solid extruded window treatment is only as durable as its synthetic recipe.  Some mixtures create a frail shutter, which can be broken by nails or screws during installation. If the faux wood composite doesn’t include a UV inhibitor, then your window treatments will fade and yellow when exposed to sunlight. Some companies need to paint their shutters, which also leads to chipping and yellowing over time.

  • Benefits:

More substantial shutter that works like a real-wood plantation shutter.

  • Drawbacks:

Quality depends on the formulation of the faux wood composite.

The Most Popular Composite Faux Wood Shutter Is A Polywood® Shutter

Polywood plantation shutters are made from an extremely durable extruded faux wood compound that will never yellow, chip, or splinter.  Its unique formula is like real wood, but with a material that withstands moisture. We add a UV inhibitor into the faux wood mixture so that the entire shutter will still look like new for year after year.  They are even easy to clean -- just a duster for routine work, and a wet cloth for stains.

Our Polywood shutters are also designed to be the most energy-efficient window treatments you can buy.  In fact, Polywood shutters are made to be 70% more energy-efficient than regular wood, and 1600% more efficient than aluminum blinds. And these plantation shutters include a lifetime warranty.  Those are benefits no other shutter company offers.

  • Benefits:

Lifetime warranty against cracking, fading, and warping; most energy-efficient plantation shutter on the market; looks wonderful in any style.

  • Drawbacks:

More expensive than hollow vinyl shutters -- but worth it!
