What To Expect With Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Darik Neilson

Before you determine what window treatment to order, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By bringing products to you, we can present how different shutters, blinds, and shades would work in your room. Now you can create an informed decision by visualizing how each window treatment looks with the rest of the room.

But what happens during an in-home consultation? And how does showing you different products at your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst prides itself on these in-home consultations, and here’s what you will see at your appointment.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Start by arranging an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make a special note to show you different options related to your preferred choice. We will also show alternatives, so you can be sure that your choice matches your ideal.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and talk about what you need in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll discuss hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your representative will also want to know how the room is used and what style you are looking to acheive. We want to achieve your final vision, so the more information, the better.

We might show you many different window treatments and measure each style against each other. Most people need to try out a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the best stain to match the room. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once you make your pick, we’ll get percise measurements of your windows. We usually measure the windows throughout the house—even if you only plan to buy window treatments for some of your windows. We perform this service because many of our customers want to get additional products without another consultation. Finally, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no phantom numbers on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Bad In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are confident that Sunburst will perform professional in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment rep. It should go without saying, the quality of the consultation reflects the quality of the product.

First, your salesperson should treat your home with respect. He or she should show up as scheduled, ready to present, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your consultant should always give you product and company brochures and pricing information.

When it comes to price, you should always get a complete written quote. Don’t accept a guesstimate, scrawled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And always reject pricing information if they won’t measure your windows. You need to be able to follow how much you should pay and why. If a quote ever seems too good to be true, don’t be afraid to ask for references and look up the business’ online reviews.
