Which Plantation Shutters Should I Pick?

That depends on how you want the shutters to mesh with your home’s décor. Do you want a shutter that contrasts your wall paint color and has clean lines? Polywood® plantation shutters are right for you. Or are you looking to match the wood in your home as closely as possible? Ovation® wood shutters are the ultimate fit for you.

Plantation shutters are known for being energy efficient. And to get the greatest energy savings, our Polywood Shutter Insulation System is the only choice.

Why Are Shutters the Most Sought After Window Treatment?

For the budget-conscious, blinds are a temporary window treatment to cover your windows. They are susceptible to deteriorating over time with the strings giving way and the loops that hold the slats in place falling apart. In addition, they are difficult to clean.

Shades offer an array of colors and unique patterns, transforming your window into artwork. By effortlessly pulling up the fabric of the shade, your full window is exposed and you can see out onto your Las Vegas neighborhood.

Draperies also are available in a wide assortment of color, fabric, and patterns. They are a traditional option for a window treatment. Adding thick panels between the drapes and the window gives you light and temperature block-out capabilities. And unlike other window treatments, there’s no rush to clean draperies for five years.

If you want a window treatment that lasts over 10 years, saves you actual bucks on your energy bills, and looks charming on your windows, shutters are the choice for your home. Not only are shutters durable, but they’re also lovely and energy efficient. Actually, Polywood shutters insulate up to 70% better than an equivalent wood shutter. That’s energy savings you will miss out on with any other window treatment.

No other window treatment gives you control over privacy and light as plantation shutters do. And with their large louvers, Polywood plantation shutters give your room a clean contemporary feel whether they’re closed or open.

How Are Shutters Installed on My Windows?

An improperly installed window treatment can be challenging to open and can get damaged easily. We have an expert installation crew that comes to your home and installs your window treatment just right, double checking that each one moves seamlessly – and doesn’t get damaged when opened and closed.

But before we begin installing your shutters, we bring shutter samples to your home so we can custom build your window treatment together. Learn more about our free in-home consultation.

How Do I Move the Plantation Shutter Louvers?

Your plantation shutter slats – or louvers – can be moved simply by pushing them up or down. Usually, a tilt rod mounted on the front of the shutters allows you to adjust the louvers. To move the louvers with your hand, we propose buying shutters with hidden or rear-mounted tilt rods. This gives your shutters a clean, contemporary feel.

How Do I Clean My Plantation Shutters?

Plantation shutters are simple to clean because they have large louvers and their tilt bars are either hidden or mounted on the rear. Merely tilt them open and dust them like furniture – or wipe smudges with a wet cloth.

Should I Go Halfway Up My Window with Plantation Shutters?

A half shutter lets you have privacy on the bottom and leaves the top open for light and view. It’s called a café style shutter. But is it the appropriate look for a plantation shutter?

Cafe Shutters Cafe Style Shutters With Divider

Ultimately, it’s a style choice – whether you like the look of a half shutter or that of a plantation shutter with a divider rail.

A full length shutter with a divider rail “completes” your window, giving it a well-rounded look – and giving you the option to close the bottom louvers for privacy while leaving the top louvers open for light. At night, you have the option of closing the top louvers as well for privacy and security. It’s also convenient during the day when the sun is hindering you from watching TV. And don’t worry about sacrificing any of your view. A 3.5" or 4.5" louver will almost disappear when opened flat and gives you a lot of room to look through.

Will I be able to keep my old window trim if I put in shutters?

Yes! There’s rarely a need to take out or do work on your existing window trim when putting in new plantation shutters. Natural Ovation wood shutters and patented Polywood shutters are offered in a variety of frame styles to fit naturally into your existing window trim. If your windows have no trim, we also have frame styles available to install right onto the wall around your window to secure your beautiful new shutters to your window opening.

Your installation team will measure each of your individual windows during your complimentary in-home consultation to ensure that your window trim is beautifully complemented by the frame of your new window treatment.

Where are your shutters made?

Sunburst Shutters Las Vegas is proud to offer a collection of window treatments made right here in the U.S.A. Our popular Polywood plantation shutters are 100% American-made, from the creation of our patented Polywood material to the construction of the shutters themselves. Not only does that mean a lower final price without unnecessary shipping and handling costs, it also gives you the bonus of knowing you’re choosing an all-American shutter for your Las Vegas house.

And Polywood isn’t alone in hailing from the U.S.A. Our stunning Reclaimed Wood shutters are constructed using lumber harvested from sources across the country, from rustic Midwest barn doors to sturdy Texas ranch fences and more.

What’s the difference between shutter paints and stains?

The primary differentiator between painted and stained shutters is the way the material of the shutter interacts with the color. Paint lays on the top layer of the material it’s coloring, just coating the surface. Stains on the other hand penetrate the shutter, becoming a part of the natural wood or Polywood material.

The two color options have their own unique benefits. There tend to be a larger number of color choices for painted shutters. With stained shutters, the color doesn’t interfere with the natural wood grain, so you can see the random knots and ridges of the material without it being masked by a layer of paint.

When it comes time for your in-home shutter consultation, we’ll bring samples of all our color options straight to you so you can perfectly match and complement colors with your existing interior design.

How Long Will It Take To Install Shutters in Las Vegas?

The complete plantation shutter process, beginning with your initial consultation through installation, will take around four to six weeks. The reason it takes this long is because we strive to build the perfect shutters for your windows. To do that, we need to take exact measurements, use sophisticated software to design your shutters, assemble your brand-new shutters manually, and get them to your home for installation. Shutters made from real wood will usually take longer because of the staining and finishing process.

It does take some time, but it’s absolutely worth the wait.

Do I need to send my shutter measurements to Sunburst?

Sunburst Shutters Las Vegas offers a start to finish shop-at-home experience. We typically send one of our reps to your door to take precise measurements of your windows, discuss your options, and provide an accurate quote. The shutter consultation is absolutely free. That’s the most effective way to start a window treatment project. If you only need a quick estimate, you can send us the measurements of your windows through our contact form, or by calling us at 702-850-6619.

Do I Need To Remove The Trim Before Installing Shutters?

Whether or not to remove the trim depends on your personal taste. If you want to keep the trim you already have, we can build custom shutters to complement your current trim. If you like our shutter frames better, then you can take out the existing trim—but it’s not a necessity. If you’re trying to go trimless or replace your trim, we’ll help you choose the right shutter to match what you have in mind for your space.

Can I Install The Shutters Myself?

If you’re a seasoned DIYer, you’re probably familiar with what goes into a shutter installation. However, DIY shutters may be a little complex for most Las Vegas residents. We recommend leaving the installation to our certified and insured professionals, so you won’t risk damage to your shutters, windows, or injuring yourself.

What Are Your Most Popular Shutter Options?

By far our most in-demand shutter options are our classic white Polywood® faux wood plantation shutters, and Ovation® natural wood shutters.

To get more specific, the most common shutter configuration features includes a 3.5” louver, non-textured finish, and an interior-mount Z-frame. If all that information is confusing, that’s ok. We’d be happy to demonstrate what all that means in person. Schedule a free in-home consultation and we’ll help you figure out what would work best in your space.

What’s better: a smooth finish or textured finish for shutters?

Shutters with a smooth finish have a more modern look, whereas shutters with a textured finish look more natural and historic. However the benefits to each style of plantation shutter finish go a little bit farther, and in the end come down to your own taste.

Smooth shutter finishTextured shutter finish

Perks of a smooth finish for shutters – A smooth finish to your shutters give you a clean, sleek, fashion-forward look. A smooth finish might be perfect for you if your home has few other wood grain surfaces or furniture. A smooth finish makes dust easier to see, compared to a textured finish. We typically recommend a smooth finish for faux wood shutters like Polywood.

Perks of shutters with a textured finish – A wood grain finish on your shutters offers a more natural, wood-like look to your shutters. That’s ideal if you’re trying to bring the beauty of nature indoors, especially if you want to match the look of your hardwood floors. A textured finish on your shutter louvers will also make it harder to see dust, which means you won’t have to dust them as frequently as you would if they were smooth. A textured finish looks especially great on real wood shutters in Las Vegas.

How many shutter panels do I need for each window?

For the most part, the the large the surface area of your window, the more shutter panels you’ll want on it. Our recommendation is to use a single panel for windows up to 26” wide, two panels for windows up to 50” wide, and four for windows up to 98” wide.

Single wide panels are not as user-friendly as multiple panels. Sometimes, wider panels won’t fit flush against the wall because of their width. Multiple small panels solve that problem.

For windows that you might open or shut regularly, you’re usually better suited with multiple panels, since they’re easier to open and have additional support from the frame when you do open and close them.
